2015 has been a landmark year for the soulful blues revival. Releases from young up-and-comers like Anderson East, Leon Bridges and Lawrence Taylor have managed to steal the spotlight from an industry that is otherwise fueled by electronic drivel. I don’t mean to write off the entire EDM genre, there have been some tremendous releases coming out of that scene, but in my mind electronic music will never come close to capturing the raw emotion bottled by a shimmering guitar tempered by soulful storytelling.
Lawrence Taylor’s latest (and last) release off of his showstopping Bang Bang EP, “Robyn” is nothing short of mesmerizing. Taylor packs an emotional wallop with impassioned hooks over incandescent guitar licks that send shivers down your spine. He doesn’t just sing, but instead pleads, begs and unloads emotion into words that are far too fragile to support their own weight. It is in the overflowing emotion of these breaking words that Lawrence Taylor captures the genuine spirit of soul music.
If this is your introduction to Lawrence Taylor, be sure to listen to his entire Bang Bang EP. It is without a doubt one of the best releases of the year. The world seems to agree with that statement as he has already amassed over 5 million streams on Spotify with only one EP to his name.
